WiSe26-27: International Social Work Master (MRM)

Empowerment in refugee social work is shaped by institutional, legal and political power relations. In this seminar, we critically explore what empowerment means in practice and how power influences people’s agency, access to resources, and self-determination.

Using John Gaventa’s Power Cube, we examine different forms, levels, and spaces of power and apply this framework to concrete examples from refugee social work. Academic literature and knowledge developed through refugee-led organising, solidarity initiatives, and professional social work practice are brought into dialogue to examine and question different understandings of empowerment.

Particular attention is given to tensions between empowerment and control, participation and representation, and professional responsibility and self-determination. You will also be encouraged to critically reflect on power dynamics and your own professional position.
