In this seminar, students will collaborate with people from refugee backgrounds in Bamberg to explore and understand their lived experiences using the participatory methodology of Photovoice. Together, participants will capture and analyze photographs that reflect the realities, challenges, and aspirations of refugees. The group will define a research question to guide the analysis of these images, fostering critical discussion and deeper insights. The seminar will culminate in a collaboratively organized exhibition in Bamberg, showcasing the photographs and amplifying the voices behind them.

Qualitative social research, which follows the principles of the interpretative paradigm, focuses on the explorative capturing of the subjective meaning that the actors themselves give to their social actions, i.e. on capturing the actors' perspectives in their social milieus and their patterns of action and patterns of interpretation as well as their impact on the entire society. In this seminar, we will deal with this and with the social science methodological foundations for conducting an empirical, qualitative case study. The focus will be on data collection using a narrative interview and data analysis using a biographical case reconstruction in line with Gabriele Rosenthal's method. At the end of the course, students are expected to independently conduct and analyze an empirical qualitative case study.
