Introduction to Motion Tracking and Gesture Recognition discusses methods to recognize motion and gestures from sensor data, for example, inertial measurement units or video data. Gesture recognition is a computational method to identify human movements. We use gesture recognition in physiotherapy, health care, sports, and computer games. It helps train surgeons and dancers, improves golfing skills, and controls popular games like "Just Dance". This module introduces the core ideas and the fundamental motion tracking and gesture recognition methods. The focus of the module is on understanding the principles of gesture recognition through applications: hand gesture detection, gait detection, and sports.
We will look at selected gesture modelling and pattern recognition methods, for example, particle filters, Gaussian mixed models, hidden Markov models, and neural networks.
